CSCI 6930 Professional Internship (1, 2, or 3 Credit Hours)
This class allows students in the Department of Computer Science to receive academic credit for internships that relate to their graduate-level coursework.
Overview
CSCI 6930 Professional Internship is a restricted elective class, and is only available to current, degree-seeking graduate students in the Department of Computer Science. Eligible students will need to apply for the course and be approved by the department graduate committee in order for their academic advisor to enroll them in the course. FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
听
No. Only internship / co-op positions are eligible for CSCI 6930.
听
- You must talk with your graduate advisor as the answer depends on specific dates. Generally, as long as your internship does not extend until the day before classes start for the next semester, you should be okay.
- For international students, the earliest an internship can start for a given semester is the day听after the end of the prior semester. The latest an internship can go for a given semester is the day听before the following/next semester.
- If an international student鈥檚 internship/co-op gets extended in the current semester but does NOT overlap with the following/next semester, they should re-submit the CSCI 6930 application and request ISSS CPT authorization extension for the current semester only.
- If an international student鈥檚 internship / co-op gets extended so that it overlaps with the following/next semester, the student must request the CSCI 6930 course and a new ISSS visa authorization for the following/next semester. It is the same process described above.
听
Yes, as long as you are meeting the minimum working hours for the number of credit hours that you are enrolled in, the expectation for the course will be met.听
听
Yes, this is an academic course that you take for graduate course credit. The Registrar's office and Bursar鈥檚 office will treat the course as such. You must meet the same requirements and deadlines as any other class that you are taking. Visit the Bursar鈥檚 website to learn more about听cost and finances and听billing and due dates.
听
The internship credits are a regular class, therefore, they can count if you need to meet the 5 credit minimum to be a full-time student.
International students may not use the internship course to satisfy their on-campus residency requirement of their visas.听
听
- The internship course is a variable credit course, you can choose between one (1) and听three (3) credit hours in any given semester.
Students may only count exactly three (3) credit hours towards their degree requirements. Therefore,听 you can take 1 credit hour for three semesters resulting in a听total of 3 credit hours by the time you graduate.听
Professional MSCS (MSCPS) students who plan to waive the project courses requirement based on 2 years of full-time experience and 3 credit hours of CSCI 6930, must complete 3 credit hours before they take the project courses. If an MSCPS student takes less than 3 credit hours of CSCI 6930, for example, in the Summer term before they take the project courses, they are no longer eligible for the waiver and must take the project courses.
Additionally, 听if a student with fewer than three (3) credits听hours of CSCI 6930 does not have an internship /co-op in the following semester, they cannot retroactively change听their earned CSCI 6930听credit hours.听No other course may be taken to get up to three (3) credit hours of CSCI 6930.
